Authentically aged iron and copper finishes
Patina Finish Kits are designed to recreate the natural beauty of oxidized metal using real metal infused paint and a reactive patina process.
The three part system combines Patina Paint, JAX Patina and a clear Patina Sealer to produce real iron or copper finishes on properly prepared architectural surfaces.
Paint. Patina. Seal.
Each part of the kit has a separate job. The paint establishes the metal surface, the JAX Patina ages it, and the clear sealer protects the finished effect.
Patina Paint
Metal infused acrylic paint applied by brush or roller. Regular agitation during application keeps the metal material evenly distributed through the coating.
JAX Patina
The reactive patina agent is applied after the cured paint has been lightly burnished. It reacts with the exposed metal and develops the aged surface.
Patina Sealer
A clear acrylic topcoat used to halt the bloom and protect the finished surface from continued oxidation, moisture and handling.

Seven aged metal finishes
Each finish begins with either our real copper or real iron infused Patina Paint, then develops its color and oxidation pattern through the corresponding reactive patina treatment. Because these are reactive finishes, natural variation should be expected.
Copper Base
Finishes created by reacting JAX Patina with real copper infused Patina Paint.
Iron Base
Finishes created by reacting JAX Patina with real iron infused Patina Paint.
Patina Kit application
This is a reactive finish, so surface preparation, paint density, burnishing and patina application all affect the final result. Test the complete system before beginning a large project.
Wear appropriate eye, hand and respiratory protection and protect nearby floors, furniture and other surfaces from the wet patina process.
Prime the surface
Begin with a properly prepared and primed surface. A pretinted primer may be used where needed.
Apply Patina Paint
Brush or roll the metal infused paint as you would a normal architectural coating. Stir frequently during application to keep the metal material evenly distributed.
Build adequate density
Allow approximately 2 to 4 hours between coats and apply at least two coats. Areas with more metal density can produce a stronger bloom effect.
Allow the paint to cure
After the final coat, allow an additional 24 hours for the Patina Paint to fully cure before burnishing.
Burnish the surface
Lightly burnish with a Scotch Brite pad or similar abrasive. Bringing up a natural metal sheen exposes the metal and improves the effectiveness of the patina reaction.
Remove the residue
Wipe the surface with a slightly damp rag to collect remaining dust and debris before applying JAX Patina.
Apply JAX Patina
Apply with a soft brush or spray bottle according to the directions on the JAX container. Spray application is recommended where brush marks would be undesirable.
Seal the finished patina
Once completely dry, apply the included clear Patina Sealer to halt the bloom and protect the finish. Apply gently so the developed patina is not disturbed.
Stop the reaction when the finish is where you want it
A patina surface can be left natural, but an unsealed finish will continue to change and is more susceptible to surface damage and transfer.
The included Patina Sealer is a clear acrylic topcoat designed to halt the bloom and leave the finished surface durable and washable.
Clear coating can change the appearance of some oxidized finishes, so test the complete paint, patina and sealer system before final application.
Review the actual patina before specifying the finish
Patina is a reactive finish and variation is part of the result. Physical samples are the best way to evaluate the color, oxidation and surface character before ordering project quantities.

Brushout Sample
A larger physical sample for seeing more of the variation and movement produced by the reactive finish.
Because the finish develops through a chemical reaction, project surfaces will have natural variation rather than matching a sample with absolute uniformity.
